April 10, 1948—December 15, 2025
Cathleen Baker, 77, passed away at home in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday, December 15, 2025, surrounded by her family who loved her. She was born to Robert and Emma Ruth Baker in Windsor, N.C., and spent much of her early childhood growing up with her younger siblings in close-knit farming communities. Raised in the church, Cathleen learned the love of God and brought that love to others through the joy of her singing and her steady, quiet ministry to others. While serving as the longtime secretary at Newington Baptist Church, she encouraged people with her genuine warmth and ability to make them feel known. More interested in listening than being heard, she put people at ease by offering a peaceful space to share what was on their mind.
Cathleen’s family understood the full measure of her love. She centered her life around family and was happiest when everyone was gathered together. When her grandchildren were young, they named her “Grandma Sugar” and that captures her spirit well. Kindness defined her life and was one of her greatest strengths. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Bob and Ruth. She is survived by her children, Jerel Olson (Mistie), Lori Thomas, and Jennifer Wood (Kevin). In addition, she is also survived by her grandchildren, Bailey, Jered (Alyssa), Ellie, Kaeden (Angela), and Xane, as well as her many nieces and nephews whom she truly loved. She is also survived by her two siblings, Steve Baker (Cindy) and Bettie Tringali (Joe). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Mathews County. Flowers are welcome or in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Spring Hill Baptist Church.
