MARSHA POLAND

Marsha Poland, age 68, a native of Gloucester Point, passed away peacefully at her home on Dec. 24, 2020. Following graduation from Longwood University with a B.S. in Mathematics, Marsha took a job with what is now Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Knoxville. She remained in Tennessee for 40 years, and recently returned to Virginia enjoying more time with her family. Marsha was an incredibly well-rounded and well-read person. She was an avid traveler with countless trips around the world. She thoroughly enjoyed understanding the people and culture of her particular destination, and was genuinely in awe of the variety and beauty to be found in other places. In spite of her full passport, she often said that one of her favorite excursions was a cross-country trip she took with her parents in their RV. While she enjoyed a variety of culture and the arts, she loved animals and nature, in particular bird-watching and hiking in the Smoky Mountains and was a devoted Lady Vols basketball fan. Though Marsha was a quiet person, she was always listening and paying attention. She was thoughtful and intentional in everything she said and did in addition to being kind, gracious, and patient. Though she never had children of her own, she cared for and supported her nieces as if they were her own. She also adored her Doberman Pinschers, and raised and spoiled many during her lifetime. Parents, Jack and Mary Poland preceded her in death; Marsha is survived by her sister, Peggy Lewis; brother, Donald Poland (Jack); nieces, Jennifer Dooley (John) and Kim Lewis (William), and great-nephew, Carwyn and great-niece Carys. Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to either of Marsha’s favorite charities, the Lupus Foundation of America (lupus.org) or the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (gorillafund.org). Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
