The Market at Moughons, an open air-style market offering fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood, opened recently at Moughons hardware store on Main Street in Mathews.

Potatoes, tomatoes, peaches, apples, beets, grapes, lemons, limes, watermelon, squash, zucchini and other items are all on display in the small building that formerly housed the business’s garden center. Coolers lining the walls contain a variety of fish, shellfish and crustaceans, much of it supplied by Williams Wharf Oyster Company and other local watermen.

Owners Mark and Jo Ann Letchworth said the seasonal market will have more to offer as summer progresses and more local produce becomes available. Whitley’s Peanuts and locally-made preserves will be coming soon, they said. A fall market will follow the summer market, and winter will bring such items as Christmas trees.

“We’ll have a lot of nice, fun things,” said Jo Ann Letchworth.
