MARJORIE BELCH WROTEN

Marjorie Belch Wroten of Gwynn’s Island, widow of John Wesley Wroten, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Sanders Nursing Home.

She was born in Lumberton, N.C., on Oct. 23, 1925, the daughter of Edwin M. and Gertrude H. Belch.

She received her B.A. degree in chemistry from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her Master’s of Education degree from The College of William and Mary.

She was a member of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church where she had served at various times as youth choir director, Sunday school teacher and church clerk. She was a member of the Mathews County Woman’s Club.

Mrs. Wroten taught in the Mathews County School System and the Gloucester County School System for 29 years. She retired as Assistant Principal of Thomas Hunter Middle School in 1985. She was Vice President of Wroten Oil Company, Inc.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Edwin M. Belch Jr. and his wife Ruby.

She is survived by a son, John Wesley Wroten Jr. and his wife Mary; a daughter, Carol W. Hall and her husband Kerry; three grandsons, Andrew Wroten, Travis Hall and Eli Hall; one granddaughter, Jennifer Wroten; one step-grandson, Eric Beckley; two step-granddaughters, Sarah and Sophie Beckley; a sister-in-law, Gloria Wroten Huth, and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service was held at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at 2 p.m. Interment followed at the Gwynn’s Island Cemetery.
