Maritime Foundation to dive into underwater archaeology

Clyde Smith, who specializes in promoting Virginia underwater archaeology and historic maritime preservation, will be the guest speaker during the Mathews Maritime Foundation’s monthly speaker meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at the Kingston Parish House on Main Street, Mathews.

Smith will talk about his role as special projects director for NUMA (the National Underwater and Marine Agency), the Sea Hunters and the search for the Confederate submarine, the CSS Hunley.

He was introduced to author and underwater explorer Clive Cussler in 1980 during the search for the Hunley off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. Smith joined NUMA as a trustee the following year, and since that time, has traveled all over the world with Cussler and his crew, according to MMF spokesperson Dennis Crawford. He also shares the job title filled by Cussler’s fictional hero, “Dirk Pitt.”
