MARION NEWCOMBE HORTON

Marion Newcombe Horton, 92, of Stanardsville, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Born to Mern and Mattie Newcombe of Alberene, Va., Marion made her home in Gloucester, until recently returning to the mountains she so dearly loved. She was co-owner/operator of Hess Service Station in Newport News before moving to Gloucester, where she managed the Union 76 in White Marsh—later rebranded as Diamond Jims and Miller Mart. Later, she worked as site manager for Allen Gayle Construction and, finally, managed the Travelers Motel, Yorktown. Marion was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Billy Horton; their son, Billy Horton Jr., and great-grandson, Andrew Harrell. She is survived by two daughters, Sheron Gale Nelms (David) and Wandakia Piland; a sister, Irene Stargell (Milton); 29 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m., on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Hogg Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2024, in the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Gardens.
