The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News has received a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities to treat, rehouse and catalog more than 500 maritime archaeological items from the 1781 Battle of Yorktown. This work will happen in partnership with the Virginia Department of Historical Resources, which owns over half of the collection from the battle, a release said. At the conclusion of the grant period, this collection will be available digitally, as a whole, representing one of our nation’s most pivotal battles on the water. “This project is massive for our institution,” Senior Director of Advancement Sabrina Jones commented. “The Battle of Yorktown happened here on our local waterways, and we have a team of conservators who are experts in conservation of archaeological collections, making this the perfect collaboration. “The Mariners’ is one of only two institutions designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum, leaving us uniquely positioned to execute on the g...
