MARIAN CULBRETH PHILLIPS

Marian Culbreth Phillips, age 86, and a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, passed from her earthly home into the arms of her Lord Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at the Crossings in York County.

Born August 2, 1932, to the late John and Mary Culbreth, she was a 1950 high school graduate of Fayetteville High School. Following graduation, Mrs. Phillips moved to Hampton, and while working for the city, she met and married her soulmate of 67 years, W.R. “Pat” Phillips. During Mr. Phillips’ career with Newport News Shipbuilding, Marian was known as First Lady and met numerous foreign dignitaries and leaders around the world.

She was an active member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, Yorktown, serving in the Women’s Work as well as served Meals on Wheels in York County and volunteered with the Bargain Box.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, “Grammy” and for her beauty inside and out. In addition to her parents, son, W.R. “Bill” Phillips III preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband, W.R. “Pat” Phillips; a daughter, Dana Phillips Barefoot and husband Mike; daughter-in-law, Sherry Phillips; four grandchildren, Courtney Phillips Nolen and husband Ryan, Brett Michael Barefoot, W.R. Phillips IV, Alexxa Belle Barefoot, and a great-granddaughter, Ella Mackenzie Nolen.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bill Nickels was held 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2019 at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, 6218 George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown, Va. 23692 and 2 p.m. interment at Sunny Slopes Cemetery, West Point.
