MARGARET L. BUCHANAN

Margaret (Peggy) Liptrot Buchanan, 92, of Suffolk, formerly of River Bluff Drive, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Nov. 7, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Charlie Burfoot Buchanan Jr.; parents, Thomas Dean Liptrot and Isabella Hogarth Liptrot, formerly of Wigan, England and Glasgow, Scotland, and a brother, William Liptrot of Levittown, Pa.

She is survived by her daughters, Pamela B. Driggs and husband Skip (Charles) Sr. of Gloucester, and Bonnie B. Way and husband Oliver of Richmond; four grandchildren, Skip (Charles) Driggs Jr., Margaret Driggs Perry and husband Josh, Lawton B. Way and wife Shelton, and Barrett P. Way and wife Jessica; and two great-grandchildren, Ford Way and Louella Way.

Peggy was born Feb. 13, 1923 in Charleroi, Pa. She was a graduate of Marion High School, Fairhope, Pa., and Douglas Business School. Upon graduation, she worked for the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., during World War II, where she met her future husband. The happy couple was married and settled in Portsmouth, where they raised their daughters and found their way in the community. Peggy became a catalyst as the secretary to the Chaplain’s Office at the Naval Regional Medical Center. After 30 years, she retired from service and was awarded “Honorary Chaplain” by those with whom she served.

Peggy was founder and teacher of the first couples Sunday school class at Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth. Peggy and Buck enjoyed entertaining in their home on the Nansemond River and sharing the joy of laughter, and stories, and good food with neighbors, friends, and family over countless years. To be included in that number is the “El Key” supper club, with whom they fellowshipped for over 60 years.

A memorial service will be held at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, 2690 Bridge Road, Suffolk, Va. 23435 on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, at 2 p.m. There will be a reception and visitation for family and friends following the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 2117 London Boulevard, Portsmouth, Va. 23704.
