Maintenance work scheduled at Coleman Bridge

Maintenance work will be undertaken at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge twice this month—including this Sunday morning—and once in August to overhaul the hydraulic pumps and replace the electric hydraulic pump motors.

Paula Miller, communications manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation Hampton Roads District, said the work will require alternating shoulder closures of both the north- and southbound lanes. Work is planned from 6 a.m. to noon each time, she said, followed by a bridge opening to test the span.

Other openings are planned for Sundays July 31 and Aug. 21, Miller said. Rain dates are Sundays July 17, Aug 7 and 28.

Three hydraulic pumps and motors still must be replaced, Miller said, with one unit replaced earlier this year.

VDOT Hampton Roads maintains the Coleman Bridge. Roads in Gloucester are maintained by VDOT’s Fredericksburg District.
