Maintenance work being done on Coleman Bridge

Single-lane northbound closures on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge were necessary Sunday so that maintenance crews could perform electrical and mechanical work to the span.

Several other bridge closures are being planned there between now and July, with the next one anticipated in early June, said Jennifer Gwaltney, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The bridge remained fully operational throughout the scheduled work period from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Gwaltney said, and Sunday was selected for the work because of generally lower traffic volumes then. Sunday’s maintenance work also affected marine traffic.

Although traffic over the span continued for much of the work period, Gwaltney said, two 30-minute stops were necessary to allow crews to reposition equipment.

Crews removed and overhauled a portion of the hydraulic motor assembly on the span, she said. The motors open and close the swing span, she said.
