Main Street revitalization project underway

The Mathews Main Street revitalization project has begun, but the work schedule is different than previously reported. Construction is still expected to be completed before Market Days in September, but parts of the project will be handled in a different order.

During a Feb. 17 meeting of the Mathews Main Street Committee, landscape architect Ricky Wiatt of VHB, the project’s planning and design firm, said that the work would begin at the intersection of Main and Church streets, with the block between that intersection and Put-In-Creek Carvings to be completed first. The block between Church Street and Brickbat Road was to be next, followed by completion of work on the opposite side of Main Street.

However, the contractor, Howard Brothers Contractor Inc. of New Kent, has submitted a schedule that shows the storm drain that runs along Main Street between Brickbat Road and Kingston Parish being completed first. This section was originally not part of the contract, but has been in...
