Main Street paving project rattles drivers, business owners

Road construction along Gloucester’s Main Street has left business owners and motorists rattled, literally and figuratively, over the past week. Milling and grinding of the road began Oct. 18 and paving of portions of the street started Monday.

According to Kelly Hannon, communications manager with the Virginia Department of Transportation, the paving work along the retail corridor of Main Street should be finished by tonight, weather permitting, while the remainder of the project is expected to continue through mid-November.

Main Street business owners and patrons question why they weren’t notified in advance about the $283,000 project, including the street being closed to on-street parking between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day during the period the road construction was taking place.
