Main Street design improvements topic at business luncheon

The Mathews Main Street Committee met Wednesday, and the topic of the day was the design for continued enhancements to Main Street, this time from Food Lion to Hyco Corner. Speakers talked in terms of lessons learned and of what will be done differently this time around.

Carolyn Taylor of the Main Street Committee said that a subcommittee of the group had looked at the plans for Phase 2 of the project to see how they could be changed without having to start over from the beginning, and they had come up with four proposed changes. First, she said, a deep drop at the entrance to the Food Lion, Grover’s Auto and Mathews Post Office causes vehicles to “bottom out” and needs to be fixed.

In addition, there is a telephone pole located immediately adjacent to the entrance that makes it difficult for big trucks to enter and exit. Often, she said, trucks have to turn left there instead of right in order to avoid the pole. If the drop were fixed and the telephone pole moved, ...
