Machen excels on FIT varsity crew

Mathews High School crew alumnus Phillip Machen is blazing an impressive trail as a freshman in the men’s varsity crew program at the Florida Institute of Technology.

Machen has improved his high school personal record 2,000-meter ergometer score from 6:25 to 6:15, ranking him in the top four on the entire FIT squad.

He is one of two freshmen on the varsity eight (the other one is a recruit from Serbia) with other members being from Philadelphia, two from Florida, two from Lithuania, and the stroke seat, a Spaniard who competed with the Spanish national team.

FIT competed in the 2015 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association’s Championship Regatta on April 18-19 in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where Machen’s boat posted the fastest time in the heats and semifinals, and then went on to win gold in the finals in a near record time of 5:40.822, two lengths of open water ahead of UVA, Oklahoma City, Temple, UNC and Delaware.
