Luckam announces retirement from dental practice

 

Hayes dentist Dr. John P. Luckam thought he retired about four years ago, but that only afforded him a brief time to go fishing before he was called back to work part-time over the past several years.

However, Luckam said this time his retirement is for real. His last day to work is set for May 10 at Family Dentistry, the Tyndall Square practice of Joe Lombard, Luckam, Nathan Vogt and Calvin Barnard.

Luckam said there have been many changes in dentistry in his 29 years in practice. A major change has been the increase in the use of dental insurance, which Luckam said was rarely seen when he first became a dentist.

Equipment is much improved now, Luckam said, including smaller drills, enhanced x-ray capability, sealants and white fillings.

"Dentists are now more patient and kinder," Luckam said, as there’s been an emphasis on taking the stigma out of going to the dentist, making offices bright and cheery.
