Local youth participate in weekend 4-H contests

Members of Gloucester 4-H clubs took part in the County 4-H Communications, Visual Arts and Table Setting contests Saturday at the T.C. Walker Education Center. The Gloucester Bay Riders 4-H Horse Club also hosted its Northern District 4-H Horse Communications Contest and Horse Bowl at TCWEC Saturday. Approximately 40 students participated in one or more contests, which were supported by volunteers. These contests help youth build confidence, communication skills and subject-matter mastery. Communications contests teach students how to speak clearly, organize ideas and share their knowledge with poise. Table Setting and Visual Arts contests encourage creativity and attention to detail, while allowing students to express themselves through oration, design and theme. Horse Bowl helps youth strengthen critical thinking, teamwork and equine science knowledge in a fast-paced, engaging format.
