Verizon-authorized retailers in Gloucester and Hayes are participating in the national School Rocks Backpack Giveaway, to be held beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at 6882 Walton Lane in Gloucester and 2417 York Crossing Drive in Hayes.

Local families are invited to visit Wireless Zone and pick up a backpack full of school supplies such as pencils, paper, a pencil box, a ruler, and glue.

Backpacks will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis, said a press release, and any extras will be donated to a local school.

More than 100,000 backpacks will be given away at more than 1,000 TCC and Wireless Zone stores nationwide. They are being donated by Round Room LLC, the nation’s largest Verizon authorized retailer. Since 2013, the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway has provided more than 1.3 million backpacks to children across the U.S.
