Lillian Cox celebrates 90 years

Lillian Shelton Cox of Gloucester turns 90 on Saturday, and has already celebrated with four generations of her family.Her daughter Nan Crawford and sister Hazel Shelton Farmer hosted a catered luncheon on May 29 at Irvington Baptist Church, complete with birthday cake, ice cream and family photos. Her brother-in-law John Farmer is pastor of the church.

Cox is a retired Gloucester County school teacher, an active member of Newington Baptist Church, and has been involved over the years in many Gloucester civic and charitable endeavors.

Following graduation from Longwood College, she began her teaching career in 1953 at Gloucester High School. During her first year of teaching, a young reporter from the Gazette-Journal came to do an article on the new teachers; and that day “Miss Lillian” met her future husband, the late John Cox. The two were married and made Gloucester their home.
