Li’l Ole Opry to hold second 50th anniversary show Saturday

Virginia’s Li’l Ole Opry will celebrate its 50th season of country music shows with its second anniversary show on Saturday night. This show will highlight the past, present and future of the Opry, featuring the house band, Shades of Country, and all of the Opry singers plus many special guests.

The group will perform at Mathews High School’s Harry M. Ward auditorium. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30. Ticket prices are $15 for all adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under and can be purchased in advance at the Mathews Visitor Center in Mathews and Marketplace Antiques on Route 17 in Hayes. As always, tickets are available at the door on show night, starting at 6:30.

“Our first 50th anniversary show [held on June 14] was amazing and we’re pretty excited to do it one more time with a whole different lineup of special guests and songs,” stated Opry president, Lynda Smith. Smith, daughter of Opry founder Jimmy Smith, was there for the very first show and started performing the next year, at two years old.

This upcoming show will highlight performers Ralph Motley, Lynda Smith, Richard Smith (drums), Tracy Hill, A.J. McKeen, William Earl Sadler (keyboards), Susan Ripley, David Shuber (bass guitar), Sam Hogge (lead guitar), Michael Gregg (fiddle), LeighAnn Abbott, Shane Norris and Mike McDevitt (lead guitar).

Special Opry guests for the night will include past performers Lisa Harvey Abernathey, The Mullins Sisters, Farren Winter, Walt Stillman, Jim and Joell Kepka, Cheryl Lilly Hargus, Wade Hall, Craig White, Christy Snyder Thompson and others.

All the performers will offer their signature songs from the past as well as songs that pay tribute to stars of the Opry who are no longer with us. Be prepared to reminisce with songs from Delbert McClinton, Joe Diffie, Patsy Cline, Ray Price, George Jones and more, while also enjoying the newer stuff by artists like Taylor Swift and the Dixie Chicks!
