Lightning storms cause power outages

A pair of summer storms this past week knocked out electrical power for extended periods to many Gloucester and Mathews residents.

The first of the two storms rolled through Saturday evening, leaving a number of local Dominion Virginia Power customers in the dark until Sunday morning. The second thunderstorm struck late Tuesday night.

Janell Hancock, a spokesperson for Dominion, said that all the weekend power outages had been corrected by late Monday. Then the next line of storms rolled through, leaving 474 customers in Gloucester and 10 customers in Mathews still without power as of 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Although specific areas of outages for the Tuesday night storm were not readily available Wednesday morning, Hancock said, she there were about 1,100 outages locally Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. Plans were to have everybody with lights back on by last night.
