Mathews Memorial Library, a significant entity in the county for nearly a century, has enriched the local experience in countless activities. Here are three photos featuring long-term librarians who preceded the present long-term administration of Bette Dillehay, who has served as director since February 2002. From top photo, librarian Dahlia E. Callis in 1959 displayed the eggs collected by the late Dr. Carl C. White over many decades, comprising eggs of numerous bird species in the United States and Canada; center, librarian Mildred Hudgins held in 1981 the list of overdue books which was more than seven feet long; in bottom photo, the library accepted in 1991 a paper written by Katherine H. Davis as a high school senior project in 1990, “A Commentary on the Early History of Mathews County.” From left are librarian Martha Story, Davis, library board chair Betty Durkovich, and Jack Stillman, president of Friends of the Library.
