Library presentation focuses on concept of ‘Tribe’

Three members of the Wolf Creek Cherokee Tribe of Virginia gave a presentation last week at Mathews Memorial Library as part of the library’s 2017 Read It Mathews program. The public was invited to join in this “new kind of book discussion,” which featured this year’s chosen book “Tribe” by Sebastian Junger. 

Chief Terry Price and tribe members Andrew Tyler and Jeff Ladd shared stories and information about their heritage and about the importance of tribal life as it relates to community. They highlighted the “tremendous sense of belonging that is present in their culture,” said a press release, and Tyler spoke of his military service in the Middle East and the “tremendous sense of homecoming” he felt upon his return to Virginia. They also spoke about the threats to their culture and their desire for state recognition.
