LEWIS SAMUEL HOGGE

Lewis Samuel Hogge, 93, of Hayes, died Oct. 21, 2015 at his home.

Sam was a native of Gloucester following in the footsteps of his ancestors making his living from working the surrounding waters. He loved his fishing and clamming. Sam was known as the “Mr. Fixit Guy” in his neighborhood. He could do most anything. He enjoyed strumming on the guitar and visiting in the nursing homes. Sam enjoyed people and never met a stranger. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. A man as humble and loving as Sam will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Tessie Hogge; wife, Mary Hogge; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Bernard West Sr.; grandson, Bernard West Jr.; sister, Alice Horsley; brothers, John, Marion and Andrew Hogge, and great-grandson, Jason West.

He is survived by son, Sam Hogge Jr. and wife Brenda Kaye; daughter, Elizabeth Hogge; sisters, Catherine Haywood and Betty Lyell; brothers, Jennings Hogge and wife Sophia, and Tom Hogge and wife Betty Jean; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Sam is also survived by his loving companion of many years, Carolyn Howlett, and her children, Mary, Pam and Kenny.

Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Richard Whiteheart and the Rev. Dr. Rodney Autry was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment followed in Gloucester Point Cemetery. A visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 25 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
