In response to Michael Hedrick’s Readers Write comments (Come on, Joe, Aug. 9):
I think it was over a year that my wife and I sat next to Joe Mereness in church before I found out that, like me, he was also a Vietnam veteran. Most vets of that war usually aren’t walking around expounding on their experiences in Southeast Asia, and Joe is certainly not one to use the “veteran card”! He does list being a Vietnam vet under his name when he writes, but if one ever reads his letters, it is clear he has more important themes to address than bragging about his war experiences.

Yes, many of us vets (of all conflicts) are carrying wounds both psychological and physical. We are “damaged goods,” but Mr. Hedrick should never feel that he “contributed nothing.” He served his country, therefore we applaud his contributio...
