I must once again take exception to Mr. Larson’s assertions in recent letters about William and Mary students’ need for remedial services. Most recently, he has written that the very existence of a Writing Resources Center at the college "would appear to me (to hint) at students’ increasing need for help in writing and speaking at the college level."

In his letter, he suggests that I talk with faculty about the center and why it exists. I have taken Mr. Larson’s advice to heart and have visited the center and spoken with the center’s director, professor Sharon Zuber, who assures me the center’s consultation services are in no way remedial. She describes the center as a place for ongoing learning through which skills are enhanced and fine-tuned.
