Editor, Gazette-Journal:
The opinion page of the Sept. 26 Gazette-Journal carried two letters that strangely agreed on one issue. Mr. Williams (“GOP must embrace the rising tide of conservatism”) and Mr. Thompson (“Individual parts of Obamacare are very popular”) both, although for different reasons, think current Republicans should go.
Mr. Thompson’s thoughtful and informed letter deduced that without replacing certain Republicans with Democrats, our government would continue to be gridlocked with the radical right. Mr. Williams’s letter called for a party purge, replacing them with a more radical crop. There are no data available anywhere supporting the notion that the GOP’s dismal numbers are because they are too liberal. Their numbers are so bad (13 percent approval rating) because they have focused on Obamacare’s demise at the expense of everything else.
Flooding the election process with folks who cannot win would certainly improve the Democrats’ position. Mr. Thompson’s only omission was that the Democrats are not feeling the love, either. Maybe they should both go.
Many parts of Obamacare need to be improved or deleted, yet very little effort has been made to discuss needed changes. Our Constitution has been amended 27 times because the founders, contrary to some folks’ opinions, missed things, made mistakes, just didn’t want to deal with certain issues—or, my favorite—the World Changes. Work together on Obamacare, leave the good parts alone and deal with the flaws.
