Editor, Gazette-Journal: Social Security’s trust fund is projected to be depleted by 2032, at which point benefits could be cut by about 24%. This problem is due to an aging population and a decreasing ratio of workers to beneficiaries. Now, it will likely come sooner due to ICE immigration crackdown. Undocumented immigrants do pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. Research estimates they contributed annually roughly $25 billion to Social Security, $6.4 billion to Medicare and nearly $9.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes. This administration’s incarceration and deportation practices will decrease inward flows, increasing the budget deficits and the risk trust fund might be depleted sooner.
