Letter: Why this is important

Over the past weeks, much discussion has transpired as to the “temperature” of the economic climate of Mathews. Many citizens have been active in the discussions. In preparing for a follow-up meeting to discuss with stakeholders ways to proceed with permitting for the Islander, we ran across a Market Analysis that was prepared and paid for by Mathews County in 2001.

The report showed there’d be jobs, both permanent and temporary. But what stood out for us was a note about a “$4,000,000 impact on local taxes from direct and indirect spending collected in the first 10 years of operation … In addition, this project would bring thousands of visitors to Mathews, enhance the county’s image as an environmentally friendly community, and, with the redevelopment of the Islander, provided a quality of life enhancement for the people of Mathews and increase property values significantly in the Gwynn’s Island area.” This wa...
