Letter: Why move forward?

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I may not be aware of all the facts, but on the front page of this week’s Gazette-Journal is an article regarding the 2014-2015 proposed budget for Mathews County. This article states that we will not be able to fund this budget without some increase in local taxes.

On page 13A is an article starting that the Mathews County Board of Supervisors is, however, moving forward with a grant application to help develop the East River Boat Yard. For the implementation of this grant, the county would be responsible for $162,750 in cash and in-kind services (not sure what that phrase means).

Reading this article brings to light even more money that the county would be responsible for. Why would we even consider moving forward with this project when we know we cannot meet the county budget without an increase in taxes?
