Letter: Where do we draw the line?

A couple of weeks ago, I received an e-mail from Rob Wittman under the heading, “protecting religious liberty” touting his efforts to prohibit taxpayer funds for any healthcare coverage that includes abortion, ostensibly to promote our freedom of religion.

I am saddened and frustrated that politicians look at this issue so one-sidedly. If an organization protects a woman’s legal right to have an abortion, then all their funding must be cut. Planned Parenthood is one such organization that the Republicans would like to defund. 97 percent or more of what PP does has nothing to do with abortion; in fact, they are providing many services that help reduce the need for abortions.

They provide family planning counseling, pre-natal care, cancer screening, they offer birth control and basic information to those that need it. Take away their funding and they will not be able to offer this care to thousands of people and because of that, more women wi...
