Letter: What’s in a name?

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I’ve been reading about the Gwynn’s Island Bridge in the last few issues of the Gazette-Journal so it might be time to ask this question. What is the official name of the Gwynn’s Island Bridge?

A few years ago I was stranded on Gwynn’s Island an hour or so at what I always thought was the Gwynn’s Island Bridge. In frustration, I called the VDOT coordinator for information. After several attempts to tell her which bridge was stuck open, she advised me there was no such bridge, but reported an unscheduled stoppage of vehicular traffic at the “Cricket Hill Bridge.”

Well, that is where that bridge leaves mainland Mathews FOR Gwynn’s Island. Apparently, VDOT has as the official name, the place from which one leaves. That was news to me and I would bet a lot of folks around here would be surprised, maybe even some of those bent on renaming everything.
