Letter: What makes ‘good public schools’?

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on Mr. Ingram’s comments as reported in the March 14 edition of the Gazette-Journal. The first comment on which I reflect is, “I’m not against a raise, but as long as I’ve sat here, it happens every year that they’re here on our backs. And if you give them full funding every year they’d be after you every year.”

One question that comes to mind is: Has there ever been a time in the past two decades that the schools have received full funding of all their budget requests? I am not a fact-checker but having served as a school member for the past 15 years; I do not recall in those 15 years that the school division has ever been fully funded. 

The second comment on which I reflect is, “We represent 8,500 people, not just the school system.” Mr. Ingram has commented many times in the past that he has to look out for the senior citizens in the community who are on a fixe...
