Editor, Gazette-Journal: The upcoming election, and the just started early voting period, is important on several layers. Here, I want to warn voters about one of the three proposed constitutional amendments. I voted “No” on all three, but the first one needs special attention. This concerns abortion, which is already codified in Virginia law. The first part of the amendment is below: “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to (i) protect the freedom to make personal decisions about prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, abortion, miscarriage management, and fertility care; (ii) protect doctors, nurses, and patients from being punished for these decisions.” Seems innocuous at first reading, doesn’t it? But the Democrats who crafted this proposed amendment are nothing if not disingenuous. Notice what’s missing?
