Letter: What a great neighborhood!

This last Thursday, the Sail Cove neighborhood was struck by a short but very powerful microburst. This brief storm brought down a very large pine tree which was located near the road and on our property.

This tree fell across the road, completely blocking all traffic. A half hour had not gone by when neighbors started showing up with chainsaws, rakes and shovels. Jim McFarland, who seems to always be around when a neighbor needs assistance, brought his front-end loader and within an hour the road was cleared for traffic. Neighbors helping neighbors—there seems to be a lot of that in Mathews!

Within the same hour, VDOT showed up and told me that they would be out the next day to clear away all of the debris, and the next morning there they were, cleaning it all up. The extra energy they got from my wife’s Nieman Marcus bars helped fuel them, I’m sure. What a wonderful experience to watch the whole scene, and what a great place Mathews is to...
