Letter: We should be working together

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Unfortunately, the school mask debate that is roiling communities nationwide has found its way to Gloucester.

Appallingly, some folks believe their individual rights supersede the rights of the community to protect itself against a viral scourge. Sensible mitigation measures based on scientific data to minimize the spread of COVID apparently mean nothing to these folks.

Schools are perfect settings for the spread of COVID. During my 20-plus years as an educator, I have seen obviously sick children sent to school when they should have been kept at home leading to the infection of their classmates.

COVID is insidious. Just look at the infection, hospitalization and death rates on the rise in Virginia. We should be working together as a community to fight this viral enemy rather than attacking select school board members whose focus is making sure students and staff are safe.
