Editor, Gazette-Journal: Trump has just issued a pause on immigrant visas from 75 countries. He’s deployed 1000s of masked ICE agents to abduct anyone who looks like they might be an immigrant. He’s made it quite clear that immigrants are not welcome here—not just undocumented immigrants but even naturalized citizens, holders of green cards, those with visas—people who have done all the necessary work to come here legally. Trump paints all immigrants as, at best, lazy opportunists living off social services and at worst, violent criminals who are making Americans unsafe. In truth, immigrants commit far fewer crimes than those born here and immigrants have a larger positive fiscal impact than native born Americans. For every $1.38 an immigrant pays in taxes, they consume $1 in government benefits. Compare that to those born here, who for every 69 cents they pay in taxes, receive $1 in government benefits.
