Letter: We must fund our schools properly

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I entered the old courthouse building on March 26 for the supervisors’ meeting with a short document I had spent considerable time preparing and hoped to read that night supporting our schools and teachers here in Mathews.

A time of three minutes had been set for each one to speak. Knowing this, I cut mine back considerably, but when the gavel struck and I was told my time was up, I was shocked and hurt because I did not feel the board, at least the chairman, wanted to hear my concerns.

Regardless, my key points were next, so thought I’d share them in the Gazette-Journal where there is no gavel. I stopped by the school board office Monday afternoon to clarify some data. Kristi [MCPS Director of Business and Finance Kristi Anthony] had the salary increases and health insurance increases from 2005-2006 to present:

… If salary increases just kept pace with the cost of living at 2.8 percent, it would be 39.2 percent over the last 14 years.
