Editor, Gazette-Journal: Rumors are flying. Confusions abound. Emotions are soaring. Now is a time to pause and consider the questions. The question before Virginia’s voters is “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?” Why is this proposed amendment necessary? It is in response to partisan gerrymandering that began in Texas with pressure from the president for five more Republican-leaning districts. The Texas legislature complied without voter approval. Other states with Republican legislatures have followed suit to fulfill the president’s demand to manipulate Congressional districts.
