Editor, Gazette-Journal: Recently, I participated in a town hall in Mathews County concerning the Redistricting Amendment that we will soon be voting on. I went into the meeting supporting a change to the Virginia Constitution to allow legislators to redraw our congressional district lines before the November 2026 elections. I came out of the meeting with amplified enthusiasm for the Amendment and a greater sense of obligation to be a vocal advocate for it. What caused the change? There was no single reason, but in that room of 60-plus concerned citizens, I sensed the deep fear people feel about the irrational, unpredictable, and authoritarian way our executive branch is acting, both domestically and on the world stage. Our democratic principles have been undermined as never before, and we have become dangerous actors on the world stage, threatening takeovers of longtime allies and invading other countries without congressional approval.
