Letter: Vote No!

Editor, Gazette-Journal: There are many reasons anyone living in Mathews County, regardless of party, should vote “no” on the Redistricting referendum scheduled for April 21, early voting begins this Friday! Everyone knows gerrymander is a dirty word. It’s a given. That’s why in 2020 Virginians voted by a 2-to-1 margin in favor of a bipartisan redistricting committee. In 2019, Abigail Spanberger stated the obvious: “Gerrymandering is detrimental to our democracy, opposing gerrymandering should be a bipartisan priority.” She still toed the line during her run for Governor. When asked specifically about the issue, she said, “short answer is no, I have no plans to redistrict Virginia.” However, now that Governor Spanberger is in office and Democrats also control the Virginia House and Senate, suddenly gerrymandering is a noble thing?
