Letter: Vote for virtue

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
Final Word re yet another noisy election cycle.
Ben Franklin commented at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1781, that “only a virtuous people can keep a Republic.” By that he meant that principles and morality must accompany this document in perpetuity.
We must now choose a candidate that comes closest to those attributes. To our disadvantage “closest” is not a reliable scale of integrity.
In conclusion, if “principles and morality” are important then, the Republican/Conservative Party is closest. It follows then, that if those attributes are not important then, Ben Franklin “rolls over” and so much for virtue. Incidentally, the incumbent candidate has been “mentored,” for four years, by a governor with much integrity.
