The article in last week’s Gazette-Journal pointed out concerns about the downgrade of Coast Guard Station Milford Haven. Mostly they were about the impact on boating safety, protecting local commerce such as fishing, protecting the bay from drug activity, pollution and the potential delay in response time for a person in distress. These should be the number-one concern to the boating public.
But there is another side to Coast Guard Station Milford Haven’s presence on the Middle Peninsula, most notably in Mathews, Gloucester, Middlesex and Lancaster County, and that is: Station Milford Haven is our family.
Some 25 young active duty men and women at Station Milford Haven live, play, go to dinner in the local restaurants, buy and rent real estate, their children go to our schools, their spouses work at our hospitals, teach our children, work in local businesses. We are all one family.
