Editor, Gazette Journal: Thank you for your May 14, 2026 editorial lamenting the failure of the 1976 Bicentennial “Virginia Shrines of Independence” to contain any mention of the importance of Mathews County (then Kingston Parish) to the historic events of the American Revolution. You hopefully noted that perhaps the upcoming 250th publications would take better note of our contributions to independence. Sadly in at least one instance, Mathews continues to fly under the Richmond radar. The Virginia 250 Passport which lists Revolutionary War Sites of Virginia once again fails to include any mention of Mathews. Clearly we are going to have to take on this battle for attention ourselves. In that regard, the Mathews VA250 Committee is doing what it can. As readers of this paper know, among other activities, we have scheduled a 1.776 Historic Walk Run and Free Old Fashioned Picnic for the Court House Green on July 4.
