Letter: U.S. must show real strength against Russia

Editor, Gazette-Journal: As we approach the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, I am deeply concerned by the United States’ failure to provide consistent, direct assistance to a democratic nation under brutal attack. While continued serious dialogue toward peace is essential, it is not enough. Russia’s relentless bombardment of Ukrainian cities makes it clear that the Kremlin has no real interest in a lasting or just peace. It is important to remember that Russia is the aggressor—not Ukraine. Half-measures and wavering support will not end this war. They will only prolong it. The U.S. needs to provide Ukraine the power to win the war. Only then will Vladimir Putin realize he cannot win. Providing Ukraine with the vital aid it needs to defend its sovereignty is an investment in global stability and U.S. and European security.
