Letter: Turning away refugees based on religion is wrong

As his constituents and as members of a Quaker community, we were disappointed to see Rep. Rob Witt-

man’s support of HR 4038, the America SAFE Act of 2015, restricting refugee access to the United States based solely on religion (Muslim) or country of origin (Syria and Iraq). It was a relief when the Senate refused to consider it in January, but we are concerned that there will be other attempts to reintroduce it or similarly prejudicial legislation.

The United States has a history of welcoming refugees and immigrants. Since 1975, the United States has successfully resettled more than three million refugees. The United States has the most secure, vetted and robust refugee screening process in the world, which involves the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Department of Defense and multiple intelligence agencies.
