Letter: Tribute, from one educator to another

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

During the next several weeks, there will be many people who will share their thoughts and memories of Mr. Harry M. Ward.  For me, and many others, our words will not be adequate to describe the impact that “Coach Ward” had on our lives. He was our teacher, coach, principal, school superintendent, and friend. And, he was our leader and motivator who helped to shape our vision for the future, our goals and ambitions for life, and our values and beliefs.

Mr. Ward was not a perfect man. Like all of us, he had flaws and made mistakes. But, he didn’t let disappointments and mis-steps slow him down. He was driven and motivated to overcome setbacks and remain resilient. I could write pages and pages of the many stories that I remember—from Mr. Ward’s history classes, from Mathews High School football teams, and even experiences we had when I coached Mr. Ward’s son, Gary, on the Gloucester High School baseball team. Throughout the years, he was a mentor and some...
