Letter: Traffic problems in Mathews

I read in the May 12 issue of the Gazette-Journal where Sheriff Mark Barrick had addressed matters pertaining to traffic safety concerns when he presented recently at the Triad Senior Safety Fair. The article prompted me to write this oft-thought-of letter, too long overdue. That, and a near incident on a recent Saturday morning at Hyco Corner …

Coming from Moon, as we pulled (first) to the line at Hardee’s where there is a stop sign, and signaling a left-hand turn onto Main Street, a large pickup truck hauling a boat and trailer came toodling down Buckley Hall Road past Hyco Market and, completely ignoring the stop sign, proceeded to start to barrel around the corner. I don’t know whether it was our vehicle’s horn or the glare from my wife’s eyes that stopped the shocked driver—who emphatically applied the brakes, as did my wife—but it was tragedy narrowly averted.
