Letter: Time is critical in preserving L.M. Callis House

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

The 1910 L.M. Callis House is scheduled to be demolished and sold off bit by bit to a salvage company in Richmond beginning the first of March!

Help save one of the last 1900s foursquare homes in downtown Mathews. These homes have been torn down one by one. What will be left to tell the story of this special seafaring community in its early years?

The exterior is beautiful with a decorative cast iron crown; slate roof over hips and valleys; dormer windows with leaded glass; trimmings with dentil moldings and brackets/blocks; and a large, inviting front porch with eight columns.

All we are asking the Bay School Art Center of Mathews is to delay the demolition. Allow the community an opportunity to save the house by preserving or moving it.

If you are interested in supporting this effort, please join the “Save Downtown Mathews” Facebook Group. Also, tell all your friends and organizations!
