Editor, Gazette-Journal: Mathews County has two ladies running for the school board—one has been a member of the community for decades, the other is a fairly newcomer. There have been two town hall type forums for these same ladies to present their views on the Mathews schools and their vision for the future. The first venue was attended by both, both answered questions (somewhat one-sided in the intensity of the questions), but both attended. At the second venue, only one lady showed up. What does that say about the importance of the job? The reasoning behind the no-show was “a political group was sponsoring it and it wouldn’t have been fair.” Excuse me? I want anyone, with a straight face, to tell me that the NAACP is not a politically based group and with the same straight face, tell me that their event was not one sided.
